Innovative robotics for medicine: KUKA at ICRA 2022 in Philadelphia

At the International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) from May 23-27, KUKA demonstrates how robotics can be used to accomplish unique medical tasks.

16 May, 2022

New technologies such as sensitive robotics are opening up new possibilities, particularly in medicine, for treating patients more gently, more precisely and thus more effectively. The sensitive KUKA LBR Med, for example, is the first collaborative robot to be certified specifically for integration into a medical product. At ICRA 2022, KUKA and partners will demonstrate how the LBR Med can be used in medicine for highly complex and sensitive treatments such as brain tumor biopsy.

In the application, a tumor biopsy is simulated on a model with real-time tracking. In the process, the user can place the biopsy needle with the help of the LBR Med.

The target and entry positions are planned in advance on the basis of computer tomography data and displayed on an interactive screen. The application is an example of what can be achieved thanks to robotic application in medical technology

Robotics in work and everyday life

KUKA has been a sponsor at ICRA, the flagship conference of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society, for many years. It is one of the most important international events for the robotics community. For the first time since the beginning of the COVID-pandemic, ICRA is taking place in presence again, this time in Philadelphia, USA.

The goal is to bring together the world's best researchers and the most important companies to exchange ideas and progress. Many significant developments in the field of robotics and automation were first presented at ICRA in the past.

An important focus of the conference is also the practical and socio-economic impact of new technologies. After all, robotics and automation are playing an increasingly important role for the future of work and for our society.
